Title:Launching your website on Geocities

Are you a budding website developer? If yes, then you would most surely like to see your work published on the World Wide Web. This tutorial is dedicated to you.

Before we begin, Geocities requires your homepage to be named index.html

Be sure to rename it if you have kept some other name.

Also, make sure that all links to the homepage are also updated.

  • First of all, log on to geocities.com
  • Create a new account. Be sure to enter the website name as the login id.

That is, for example, you wish be launch a website called ‘FootballFanClub’, then FootballFanClub should be your login id.

With millions of websites launched, getting the name of your choice is sometimes very difficult. You may receive a message saying that the name you requested is unavailable. Therefore, keep some alternate choices at hand.

  • Once you’ve created your account, you’ll receive an email from Yahoo requesting you to activate your account. You will need to confirm by clicking on the link supplied in the mail.

Now you are ready to publish your work.

  • Log into geocities using the login id and password that you supplied during registration.
  • Once you are in the member area, click on Easy Upload.
  • Browse to the folder where you have your website.
  • Choose your first file, and click Open.
  • Similarly, choose more files.

By default, it allows you to upload 5 files at a time.

You can choose how many files you wish to upload at a time.

If your files are heavy, I suggest you upload few at a time, else, you can publish as many as twenty in a go.
If you receive errors while uploading files, check if there are spaces in the file name. Rename your files by removing the spaces, and then try again.

To publish folders:

  • Go to File Manager, and select the option Subdirectories. You will find this option at the lower right end of the page below your file list. Then create your folder. It will be placed in the current directory. So, be sure to be in the directory you need it in. By default, the images folder is already available, so no need to make it.
  • Then click on the folder in which you need to upload your files. Then click on Upload Files, and repeat the file publishing steps as explained above.

To move files from one folder to another:

  • If by mistake, you have copied files in an incorrect folder, select the file by checking the checkbox, and then move. Choose the correct folder to move it into.

Once you are done, check out your website. The url is available in your file manager screen, above the files list.

Check for image and hyperlink paths, and correct any errors.
